The advisory was updated on October 23, 2026, though there were no changes to the advisory level or risk indicators. The advisory summary was updated to reflect an increase in potential armed attacks by the Iranian-supported Houthis and Iranian efforts to target US government officials in the region.
Saudi Arabia Travel Advisory: Reconsider Travel, Says US Embassy
The advisory reads: “Reconsider travel to Saudi Arabia due to risk of drone and missile targeting of American interests by Iran and the Iranian-supported Houthis, armed conflict, terrorism, exit bans, and local laws regarding social media activity. Some areas have increased risk.”
It also warns: “Do not travel to the Yemen border region due to terrorism.” US government employees working in Saudi Arabia are not allowed to travel within 20 miles of the Yemen border, and need special authorisation to travel to the cities of Qatif, Taif and Yanbu, and the provinces of Jizan, Asir, and Najran.
On October 23, the Department of State also ordered non-emergency US government employees and their family members to leave Saudi Arabia due to safety risks, underlining the seriousness of the updated guidance.
Missile and Drone Threats, Terrorism and Exit Bans
Iranian-supported Houthis have engaged in hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including attacks on civilian airports and other critical infrastructure, resulting in civilian casualties and severe travel disruptions. The advisory warns those hostilities have the potential to escalate rapidly.
Iran and Iran-backed Houthi rebels have launched missile and drone attacks into Saudi Arabia, impacting cities, infrastructure, airports, military bases, diplomatic, and energy facilities throughout the country. Falling debris from intercepted drones and missiles is also a risk, and US citizens living and working near energy infrastructure and military bases may be at increased risk, especially closer to the border with Yemen.
The advisory also highlights terrorism risks, noting attacks can occur with little or no warning, especially around holidays, and can involve knives, firearms, and vehicles. Tourist locations, hotels, transport hubs, markets, and entertainment venues are among the places listed as potential targets.
Finally, it warns that Saudi Arabia has imposed exit bans on some US citizens that prevent them from leaving, in some cases lasting many years, related to pending criminal and civil cases, unpaid fees, family disputes, or financial and labour disagreements. Travellers are also reminded they are subject to Saudi local laws, including laws regarding social media activity, and US authorities cannot guarantee release if detained abroad.
