Mick Foley Reveals His Biggest Regret About Working With Shawn Michaels
During a recent fan Q&A in Germany, Foley was asked about his match against Michaels at WWE In Your House: Mind Games in 1996. The interviewer praised the bout and asked whether Foley realized they were doing something special while it was happening. Foley immediately praised Michaels, explaining that the match remains one of his personal favorites — sitting just behind his 2004 encounter with Randy Orton.
Foley explained that being WWE Champion in that era came with enormous pressure. The champion was expected to carry the company, handle media appearances, headline shows, and deliver great matches night after night. According to Foley, that workload was taking its toll on Michaels by the time they worked together. “Shawn was worn out,” he said.
Mick Foley Wishes He Had Wrestled Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania
Foley recalled approaching Michaels with ideas for their match. Michaels was receptive, liked what Foley laid out, and the two went on to deliver a performance fans still talk about today. But despite how well they clicked, Foley admitted his one regret: “We did not have a bigger program, like a bigger storyline that could have ended up like I would have loved to have wrestled Shawn at WrestleMania. I just wish we could have had more time together in the ring and in the storyline.”
The two never did get that WrestleMania match, despite proving at Mind Games how well they could work together. Both men went on to have legendary careers, but a longer Foley-Michaels rivalry remains one of WWE’s great what-ifs.
