Bill Maher fired back at Donald Trump on Friday’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” with a zinger only he could deliver: “Eating with Trump is like dating Taylor Swift. It’s a lot of laughs at the time, but later on they’re tearing you a new asshole.” The joke came days after Trump unloaded on the comedian in a record-breaking 1,300-word Truth Social rant.

The backstory: Maher had his second White House dinner with Trump on October 15, joined by ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith and Kid Rock. On his October 23 episode, Maher defended the meeting — telling critics, “You know what? F*** you. I like these dinners” — while also ribbing the president, calling him “half sane” and flagging his underwater polling numbers.
Trump’s 1,323-Word Tirade: The Longest Ever
Trump responded Sunday night with a Truth Social post that outlets count at 1,318 to 1,323 words — reportedly the longest of his roughly 97,000 social media posts since 2011, smashing his previous record of 723 words. In it, he called Maher a “complete and total loser,” a “major POTHEAD,” and a “sleazebag,” claimed the dinner lasted “two hours, maybe less,” disputed Maher’s polling claims, and ended with: “Bill: Don’t call anymore.”
Maher’s Response: “Kind of a Flex”
Maher took Trump’s literary ambition in stride. “Did you see the 1,300-word tweet he sent out? Longest ever. Kind of a flex,” he said during Friday’s monologue, reading from a three-page printout of the post. He also fact-checked Trump’s digs, noting that the president “doesn’t even notice what I actually say,” and aired a compilation of his defenses of the Iran War — asking at the end, “So am I smart now?”
He also observed, with characteristic dryness, that dining at the White House “is the opposite of the Cheesecake Factory — after you leave, they review you.” Notably, this is not the first such falling-out: after their first 2025 dinner, Trump similarly turned on Maher, calling him a “MORON” and “LIGHTWEIGHT” within days.
“Real Time With Bill Maher” airs new episodes Fridays at 10 p.m. ET on HBO.
