‘The Rivals of Amziah King’ Trailer: Matthew McConaughey Stars

Published

on

There’s a lot to parse about “The Rivals of Amziah King,” “The Vast of Night” filmmaker Andrew Patterson’s sophomore feature, which is positively buzzing with elements as seemingly disparate as “Matthew McConaughey is a beekeeper” and “it’s also kind of a musical” and “oh, it also gets pretty violent.”

Let’s hand it off to the film‘s official synopsis to get us on solid ground: “Set within the deep backwoods of rural Oklahoma, the film follows the charismatic and musically gifted Amziah King (McConaughey) who herds a bluegrass-playing band of misfits while overseeing the premier honey-making operation in town. When Amziah’s estranged foster daughter (Angelina LookingGlass) unexpectedly returns, he leaps at the possibility to renew connection and creating a family business. But the honey game is ruthless, and Amziah’s rivals threaten to destroy everything he has built.” The film also stars Kurt Russell, Cole Sprouse, Tony Revolori, and Owen Teague.

The film premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film and TV Festival, where our own Ryan Lattanzio called it an earnest crowdpleaser. He also hailed its production value (no surprise, coming from Patterson), writing, “Vistas of the Oklahoma landscape, and Patterson’s tenderness for the Choctaw Nation in the former of a former foster child named Ketari (newcomer Angelina LookingGlass), indicate a filmmaker with a no-doubt strong vision, each take (and there are many) embodying a sense of having been precisely storyboarded and choreographed.”

He also noted that the film “detours into energetically cut and staged musical sequences that feel like chopped-and-screwed John Carney, friends and family gathering in a living room to belt out bluegrass tunes that become earworms of their own. … Seeing McConaughey in a sorta-musical has its own obvious pleasures, the actor going all in on a character in ways he rarely has in years, even if his sweaty swagger and smarmy charisma feel like only familiar comforts. There’s too much movie here, but isn’t that better than none at all? Patterson’s big swings in filmmaking transcend the occasional shakier sum of their parts.”

Black Bear will release the film in theaters on Friday, August 14. Check out the first trailer for “The Rivals of Amziah King” below.

Trump Gave Acting AG Stack of Iran War Articles Marked ‘Treason’ in Leak Hunt

Published

on

President Donald Trump pushed for the Department of Justice to subpoena reporters’ records over Iran war leaks, multiple media reports claim.

According to the Wall Street Journal and CNN, the president allegedly complained about Iran war media leaks to Todd Blanche, giving the acting attorney general a stack of news articles that he and other officials felt threatened the country’s security. The stack in-question allegedly had a sticky note on top of it, which was labeled in sharpie: “Treason.”

It’s said Trump zeroed in on articles detailing his decision making behind the start of the Iran war, including what his advisers had told him before the launch of the military operation.

The Wall Street Journal shared in their Monday report that the storied outlet received grand jury subpoenas dated March 4 for records belonging to its reporters. Per the WSJ, the request was tied to its Feb. 23 article, titled, “Pentagon Flags Risks of a Major Operation Against Iran.”

“The government’s subpoenas to The Wall Street Journal and our reporters represent an attack on constitutionally protected newsgathering,” Ashok Sinha, the chief communications officer of Dow Jones, which publishes the WSJ, said in a statement. “We will vigorously oppose this effort to stifle and intimidate essential reporting.”

While spokespeople for the White House and the DOJ did not return TheWrap’s request for comment, a spokesperson for the Department of Justice told the WSJ, “In all circumstances, the Department of Justice follows the facts and applies the law to identify those committing crimes against the United States.”

The investigation is meant to identify leaks within the government and not a targeted attack against reporters, one source told CNN on Monday.

This update comes over a month after Trump threatened to jail an unspecified journalist after it was reported that an injured Air Force officer was missing in Iran.

“We didn’t talk about the first one for an hour, then somebody leaked something, which we’ll hopefully find that leaker,” Trump said at the time. “We’re looking very hard to find that leaker … They didn’t know there was somebody missing until this leaker gave the information. So whoever there was, we think we’ll be able to find it out, because we’re going to go to the media company that released it, and we’re going to say, ‘National security, give it up or go to jail.’“

Trump’s threat sent First Amendment advocates into a tailspin, with National Press Club president Mark Schoeff noting that the president’s remarks “risk chilling constitutionally protected reporting … sending a dangerous signal to those who would seek to undermine press freedom.”

Trump Stops Speech to Survey Crowd on Possible Vance-Rubio 2028 Faceoff

Published

on

Donald Trump stopped his speech at a White House event to take an impromptu poll regarding the 2028 presidential election, asking attendees to weigh in on two possible candidates.

During his speech at Monday’s Rose Garden Club Dinner, Trump stopped his address to survey the room to see if they supported Vice President JD Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a possible run for president.

“Who’s it going to be? Is it going to be JD?” the president noted after bemoaning about California Governor Gavin Newsom and his potential bid for president. “Is it going to be somebody else? I don’t know … Okay, let’s go. You ready? Who likes JD Vance?”

After the crowd burst out into applause at the mention of the vice president, Trump asked a follow up question: “Who likes Marco Rubio?”

This question also prompted a round of applause, inspiring Trump to suggest the two politicians could make decent running mates.

“All right, sounds like a good ticket … That was a perfect ticket,” Trump went on. “By the way, I do believe that’s a dream team, but these are minor details. That does not mean you have my endorsement under any circumstance.”

Additionally, Trump doubled down on his criticism of Governor Newsom, once again bringing up the California democrat’s learning disability. Specifically, Trump claimed Newsom called himself “a stupid person” for opening up about his life long struggle with dyslexia, adding, “He got bad test marks. He got bad this. He got bad that. He can’t read a speech.”

“He’s not a smart person,” Trump said. “He said, ‘I’m dumb just like all the people in this room.’ And now he was accused of being a racist … This guy, what he said is so bad. It was the worst interview I’ve ever seen by a professional politician.”

Watch the full speech below.

The president’s comments, which echoed a sentiment he shared back in March, appeared to reference backlash Newsom faced for telling a predominantly Black crowd at an Atlanta book event that he wasn’t “trying to impress [them]” before sharing his poor test scores.

“I’m no better than you,” the governor told Mayor Andre Dickens at the time. He later brought up his low SAT score, noting “Literally a 960 SAT guy, you’ve never seen me read a speech. Because I cannot read a speech. Maybe the wrong business to be in.”

Newsom called Trump “a brain-dead moron who bombs children and protects pedophiles” in response to the criticism in March.

SAG-AFTRA Board Approves AMPTP Deal

Published

on

SAG-AFTRA‘s national board is recommending the guild’s latest contract with the major studios to its full membership for ratification.

The board “decisively” approved the deal, tentatively sealed earlier this month, on Monday, per the union. SAG-AFTRA did not specify how the vote shook out. Now, the membership will need to vote.

Among the provisions in the new TV/Theatrical agreement, the parties agreed to merge the SAG-Producers Pension Plan and AFTRA Retirement Fund with an additional 1% to the contribution rate effective on the target completion date of January 1, 2028. The agreement also bolsters AI protections, specifically around consent and compensation, and establishes minimum rate increases.

Additionally, the agreement builds on our existing guidelines around AI including new provisions strengthening consent and compensation and establishing new and enhanced guardrails on synthetics including:

The full summary of the tentative agreement can be read HERE

The actors union managed to reach a new agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers just one week into resumed talks. After negotiations began on February 9, the parties had previously paused to make way for the WGA in March. Both guild and union sources had told Deadline that they were not far off from a deal, but a few key issues — including regarding AI measures — still needed to be ironed out.

As we reported earlier, labor sources told us SAG-AFTRA has received a “sizable” contribution to its pension fund from the AMPTP. This follows the WGA, which similarly agreed to an extended-length contract with the studios and streamers last month in its own negotiations, accepting a multi-million contribution to its ailing healthcare plan. As with the WGA, there were a series of AI “guardrail” measures put in place between the SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP parties.

SAG-AFTRA has not yet released the full deal. Details are expected upon ratification.

The labor news will keep on coming as the DGA steps up to the plate. The Christopher Nolan-led organization sat down with the AMPTP May 11 to begin bargaining.
