Amazon’s “Fourth Wing” TV adaptation is one step closer making it to the screen.

The TV adaptation of Rebecca Yarros’ romantasy book series landed a series order at Prime Video, executive producer Michael B. Jordan announced Monday during Amazon’s upfront presentation.

Additionally, “Westworld” showrunner Lisa Joy will direct the first episode of the series. Joy, who co-founded Kilter Films, is also attached as an executive producer alongside showrunner Meredith Averill (“The Haunting of Hill House”), Yarros and Jordan.

Additional EPs include Elizabeth Raposo via Outlier Society, Jonathan Nolan and Athena Wickham for Kilter Films and Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark for Premeditated Productions.

The official logline is as follows: “Violet Sorrengail is forced by her mother to enter the brutal world of Basgiath War College …. Violet joins hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.”

“I’m thrilled to be working with this dedicated, experienced team and grateful for their passion for both the books and the readership behind them,” Yarros said in a statement.

“Violet’s journey in ‘Fourth Wing’ has sparked a global phenomenon, captivating millions of readers and building an intensely passionate fanbase around its world, characters, and emotional stakes,” Amazon MGM Studios head of global programming Peter Friedlander said. “Rebecca Yarros’ brilliant series is one of the most anticipated adaptations in the world, and with Meredith and our valued partners at Kilter, Outlier, and Premeditated, we’re bringing it to life in a way that honors what fans love about the story.”

The series order is a promising move for the project, which first began the development process at Prime Video in October 2023.

Yarros is represented by Louise Fury from The Fury Agency, Matthew N. Sugarman from Weintraub Tobin and Shivani Doraiswami at Untitled Entertainment.

StudioCanal Nabs International Rights to ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ Re-Release

Published

on

StudioCanal has secured international sales rights to Guillermo del Toro‘s Oscar-winning Pan’s Labyrinth.

It comes as Pan’s Labyrinth returns to the Cannes Film Festival nearly twenty years after its historic reception in 2006. The masterpiece became del Toro’s first Academy Award-nominated film, with six nominations, including best original screenplay and best foreign language film.

It went on to nab three Oscars (for best cinematography, best production design and best makeup design), and won over 100 international awards, including three BAFTAs and seven Goyas.

The restored version, presented by Cineverse, will premiere as part of the Cannes Classics selection, in the Debussy Theatre, in the presence of del Toro today on Tuesday.

“After our successful collaboration on The Devil’s Backbone, I am honored and delighted to continue working with my friends at StudioCanal on the international sales and distribution of the 20th anniversary of Pan’s Labyrinth,” said the Mexican filmmaker. “The care and attention StudioCanal devotes to the support of legacy cinema,” he added, “as experienced in theatres and physical media, is a gift to anyone who appreciates the art of film.”

The deal was negotiated by Falko Jahn, vice president of editorialisation & development library, with del Toro’s company Necropia further expanding its catalogue. Mexican exhibitor Cinépolis will lead theatrical distribution in Mexico and across Latin America for the re-release of the film.

StudioCanal will release its new 4K restoration later this year and is planning a series of theatrical re-releases in key territories, such as the Germany, U.K., France, Benelux, and Australia this fall.

Fearfolks Takes Sales Rights On ‘Cocoa Doll’ Starring Grace Duah

Published

on

EXCLUSIVE: Fearfolks, the Bangkok-based genre label founded by Hans Audric B. Estialbo and Benetone Films, has picked up global sales rights to body horror Cocoa Doll, starring Gossip Girl’s Grace Duah.

The project is the debut feature of Muslim-Nigerian director Jumai Yusuf, based on a screenplay that was previously recognized in the Muslim List – presented by the Black List, MPAC Hollywood and Pillars Fund – and the WScripted Cannes Screenplay List, presented by Mubi.

The story revolves around a Black Muslim woman, played by Duah, who is hired by the wealthy McNeil family, but soon discovers that they has been turning previous employees in to living dolls. She must stage her escape before she becomes a part of the family’s collection.

The film is produced by The Dazey Phase’s Jake Casey (Heightened Scrutiny), Unger Media’s Jonathan Unger (Mysterious Ways) and Alta Global Media’s Steven Adams, who previously worked with Paris-based VFX house BUF (Life of Pi).

LA-based Zoic Studios is also on board the film as VFX supervisor. Production is scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2026.

“At Fearfolks, we are interested in films that push narrative boundaries and Cocoa Doll is a great example of how personal stories can translate to films that speak to a wider audience,” said Fearfolks CEO Estialbo.

Yusuf added: “While the film features the literal transformation of people into dolls, it’s also a powerful metaphor for the objectification of black women and the ways society feels entitled to their bodies, their minds, and their lived experiences.

“At its core, Cocoa Doll is an inherently feminine horror story that explores monstrous femininity, from the grotesque process of creating these dolls to the extreme lengths women will go to in the pursuit of beauty, perfection, and control.”

Unger added: “Cocoa Doll shines a light on the dark underbelly of some of our most popular pop culture touchstones and gives voice to the Muslim community, through a powerful female lead.”

Jumai’s previous works include Oscar-qualified short film Nate & John, which premiered at Tribeca Film Festival; was nominated for the 56th NAACP Image Awards, and won the Gold House Cultural Impact Award at the American Pavilion Emerging Filmmaker Showcase during the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.

Fearfolks, which is part-owned by Thailand’s Benetone Films, is also developing a slate of Thai horror and other genre films, as well as handling Thai distribution on titles from A24, Neon and The Horror Section in Thailand. Working with Benetone, the company is currently producing Thai horror film Cher, scripted by Patrick Graham (Ghoul, Betaal) and starring Pae Arak and Sukollawat Kanarot.

Cannes Market Posts Record Attendance Against Complex Backdrop

Published

on

In a release put out on the eve of its opening on May 13, Cannes Marché du Film has unveiled record attendance against a complex geopolitical backdrop.

It said 40,000 professionals were expected overall at the festival with 16,000 participants from 140 countries registered to attend, which is slightly up from 2025.

The U.S., France and the UK will be the top three countries in terms of attendance, while Europe continues to lead as the most represented region.

Asia is also out in force. This has been driven notably by Japan — this year’s Country of Honour — which has recorded a nearly 50% increase in attendance, to become the fifth most represented country at this year’s film market.

The market said attendance from Sub-Saharan Africa was also gaining traction, with Benin taking a stand for the first time this year, while Latin America is also strongly represented, notably through activities organized in collaboration with Ventana Sur.

“The Marché du Film is first and foremost a place of action, structured around three essential pillars: the global marketplace for film sales, a platform where projects are created and financed, and a hub forsharing knowledge and expertise where the industry collectively shapes its future,” says ExecutiveDirector Guillaume Esmiol.

Breaking down the numbers, the market added that the registered attendees include 1,700 buyers and 600 exhibiting companies, while there were 1,500 festival and market screenings, 250 industry events and 100 conference sessions across the event running from May 13 to 20.
