Sonic 3 & Knuckles unofficial Android port: Sonic 3 A.I.R

Sonic 3 and Knuckles is a fantastic 2D platformer from 1994 that combined Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic and Knuckles into one expansive title. You can play as Sonic, Tails or Knuckles, each with unique skills and abilities, and it was one of the Sega Genesis’ defining games.

While there is no official Android port, you can find Sonic 3: A.I.R (Angel Island Revisited) by Eukaryot on GitHub. It is an open-source fan-made remaster that takes the 16-bit classic and enhances it with widescreen support, 60 frames per second, bug fixes and a few new features.

Like all the games on this list, you do need the original game files. The easiest way to get these used to be by buying the game on Steam, but it has since been delisted, though the creator does have advice on how to still obtain the files legally.

Silent Hill unofficial Android port: playable from start to finish

The original Silent Hill remains one of the most beloved games from the original PlayStation era, a twisted horror classic that still holds up today. On GitHub, you can find a multi-platform port that works on everything from PC to Android.

It is still in beta and development is active, but the game is playable from start to finish. It is loaded with quality-of-life improvements, including much higher native frame rates and the ability to switch to a more modern controller scheme rather than being stuck with tank controls.

Jet Set Radio Future unofficial Android port: Jet Set Radio Future Unleashed

Jet Set Radio Future is a cel-shaded action game that has you controlling inline skaters throughout Tokyo, and it was exclusive to the original Xbox. From its art style to its soundtrack, it is a cult masterpiece that has earned a strong renaissance in recent years.

Jet Set Radio Future Unleashed, a fan-made native engine published by JuMatt on GitHub, lets you play it on Android. Supply your own copy of the game and you are ready to go, with higher frame rates, a resolution bump and widescreen support. Like many of these projects, it is still under development, so expect occasional rough edges.

What to know before installing unofficial Android game ports

The key rule across all these projects is the same: the port itself is fan-made, but you must supply your own legally obtained copy of the original game. These projects do not hand you the game for free, and that distinction is what keeps them on the right side of the line between preservation and piracy.

It is also worth remembering that these are community projects, not official releases. Expect betas, active development and the odd bug, but also expect passionate developers who love these games as much as you do. If you have a phone and a soft spot for the golden age of consoles, these ports are the closest thing to a time machine you will find in your pocket.
