GTA 6's Map Opens Up Relatively Early and Lets You Explore Leonida Freely, Rockstar Confirms

Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6’s map will open up relatively early, letting players explore the state of Leonida freely instead of gating regions behind story progress. The GTA 6 map open early news comes from a new Edge magazine preview, relayed by the GTA VI O’Clock podcast, and it is a major break from how older GTA games handled their worlds.

In some earlier GTA titles, such as GTA 4, the game forced players to progress through the story before unlocking the full map, using police blockades on bridges to keep Liberty City closed off until Niko Bellic’s journey advanced. GTA 5 changed that approach, letting players go wherever they wanted once the tutorials were done, and GTA 6 appears to follow that freer philosophy.

GTA 6 Map Opens Early: Explore Leonida on Your Terms

According to the preview, the state of Leonida will open up relatively early on. There will still be some initial story beats to introduce the characters and mechanics, but after that, players who want to head north and see the top of the map right away can do so. The story itself will naturally take players to many locations, but nobody will be chained to Vice City for the first ten hours if they would rather roam.

That freedom stands in contrast to Red Dead Redemption 2, which largely allowed free exploration but kept the entire map from the first Red Dead Redemption locked away until the endgame, with snipers killing players who tried to cross over early. The original Red Dead Redemption similarly blocked Mexico until John Marston’s journey took him there.

Developers Are Still Discovering New Parts of Leonida

Perhaps the most exciting detail is the sheer scale of the world. Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut confirmed that he is still discovering new locations in Leonida, even after years of development. If the developers themselves are still finding fresh corners of the map, players can expect a world dense with secrets when the game launches in a few weeks.

For a series built on the fantasy of going anywhere and doing anything, opening the map early feels like the right call, and it means the first hours of GTA 6 will be defined by player curiosity rather than locked gates.
