The 33rd annual Austin Film Festival has crowned its 2026 script and film competition winners, with ‘Paper Plane,’ ‘Helicopter’ and ‘Old Bogus Massacre’ among the standout titles honored at the Awards Luncheon on Saturday in Austin, Texas.

The 2026 cycle was the most competitive in festival history: more than 12,500 submissions arrived from around the world, with just 78 scripts advancing to the finalist round. From there, industry judges selected 21 writers and writing teams as winners, each taking home the festival’s coveted bronze typewriter trophy.

Austin Film Festival Script Competition 2026 Winners

The festival’s script competition has long been one of the premier launching pads for new screenwriting talent, and 2026 kept that reputation intact. Winners received their awards alongside the festival’s esteemed industry awardees during the October 31 luncheon, which anchors the four-day Writers Conference.

Executive Director Barbara Morgan praised this year’s class, noting that the competition exists to recognize great scriptwriting and give talented storytellers more than an award — new relationships, meaningful industry access, and opportunities that can move their careers forward. The winners, she said, represent exactly the kind of bold, original voices the festival is proud to champion.

The Drama and Comedy feature categories carry $5,000 prizes, with Horror and Sci-Fi winners taking $2,500 — but most winners say the real prize is the room: four days of panels, roundtables, and networking with working writers, producers, and reps.

The festival runs October 29 through November 5, with the Writers Conference closing November 1. This year’s program also honors established voices alongside the newcomers: Brad Bird receives the Extraordinary Contribution to Filmmaking Award, Andrew Haigh takes the Writer’s Writer Award, and Aleshea Harris gets the New Voice Award.

For the 21 new winners, the challenge now is turning a trophy into a career — and Austin’s track record of launching writers suggests many will.
