Quiztopia’s Netflix Trailer Reveals the Dystopian Quiz That Rules Japan
In the world of Quiztopia, the National Quiz has become the country’s supreme governing authority. Under the National Quiz Law, any contestant who survives the quiz can have virtually any wish granted by the government — wealth, fame, the death of an enemy, the erasure of a criminal record, even ownership of a national landmark. Eliminated contestants face brutal forced labor, and the audience treats it all as entertainment in a cheerfully dystopian society.
At the center of it all is KK, the show’s iconic host and the public’s chief provocateur, played by Takayuki Yamada. The trailer shows KK coming into contact with a group plotting to bring down Quiztopia, setting off an incident that could awaken a public consumed by the seductive nightmare of the quiz.
Quiztopia Release Date, Cast and Staff Details
Yamada leads a stacked cast: Masahiro Takashima as Commander Murakoshi, who leads the Reward and Punishment Squad that carries out penalties determined by quiz results; Eiko Koike as Shoko Kamijo, the producer behind Quiztopia; Riko Ishida as Marii, a mysterious girl intent on killing KK; Kana Kurashina as Ayako, Mari’s mother; Kōji Seto as Seiji Nanbara, an activist plotting Quiztopia’s downfall; and Renji Ishibashi as the Prime Minister of Japan.
Teruyuki Yoshida is directing and co-writing the scripts with Maggy, with music by Yasunori Nishiki. The original manga, Kokumin Quiz, ran in Kodansha’s Morning magazine from 1993 to 1995 across four compiled volumes. All eight episodes stream on Netflix on December 17.
