Shinobu Ohtaka’s Geekrown Manga Heads to K Manga on October 26

Fans of Shinobu Ohtaka just got another reason to mark the calendar. The Magi creator’s new manga, Geekrown, is officially coming to Kodansha USA’s digital manga platform K Manga, where it launches on October 26. The English-language debut follows the series’ Japanese serialization start in Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket.

Ohtaka is one of the most recognizable names in modern shonen, best known for the hit fantasy epic Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic and its prequel Adventure of Sinbad, along with the battle-fantasy series Orient, which ran from 2018 to 2024 and received a television anime adaptation. A new series from her is a genuine event for manga readers, and Geekrown is shaping up to be her boldest departure yet.

What Is Shinobu Ohtaka’s Geekrown Manga About?

Geekrown is described as a military fantasy — a genre Ohtaka has touched on in previous works but never made the centerpiece. The story follows a protagonist on a mission to expose a traitorous officer hiding within the politics of a royal succession war, a setup loaded with intrigue, strategic battles, and shifting loyalties.

That premise plays directly to Ohtaka’s strengths. Magi built its reputation on expansive world-building, morally complicated characters, and large-scale conflicts driven by ideology rather than simple good-versus-evil fights. A tale of war rooms, betrayals, and throne-room politics sounds like the perfect canvas for her style.

Geekrown Manga Launches on K Manga October 26

The K Manga addition matters because the service has become one of the main legal routes for English readers to follow Kodansha titles simultaneously with Japan. Getting Geekrown on day one means fans outside Japan won’t have to wait months for translations, and the October 26 launch date puts the English release almost neck-and-neck with the Japanese serialization, which begins October 27.

It also continues a strong run for Ohtaka. Orient wrapped its eight-year run in 2024, and she spent 2021 designing original characters for the anime Back Arrow. Geekrown marks her return to a full ongoing serialization — her first major launch since Orient ended — and military fantasy is a genre with a dedicated audience hungry for the next big title.

Early buzz around the announcement has been strong, with readers pointing out how rare it is for a creator of Ohtaka’s stature to launch something in back-to-back days across Japan and the English digital market. If Geekrown delivers on its promise of intrigue-heavy military drama, K Manga may have landed one of the biggest digital manga acquisitions of the year.
