CNN commentator Scott Jennings has been hit with a $72.5 million lawsuit by streamer Hasan Piker, who alleges Jennings used a “false, fabricated, and manipulated video” to claim Piker wanted to bring back the lynching of Black Americans.
The 38-page complaint, filed Tuesday in federal court in Washington, DC, accuses Jennings of building a political attack on views Piker never expressed, and of invoking one of the darkest chapters in American history to provoke outrage.

Hasan Piker Sues Scott Jennings for $72.5 Million
According to the complaint, Jennings “did not merely suggest that Mr. Piker held objectionable political views.” Instead, the filing states, “He falsely told Black Americans that Mr. Piker wanted them lynched for exercising their right to vote. He used the history of racial terror as the premise for a political attack built on views Mr. Piker never expressed.”
The complaint argues the accusation was “especially calculated to provoke outrage because it invoked one of the most shameful chapters in American history.” Piker, one of the most prominent left-wing streamers online, is seeking $72.5 million in damages, a figure that underscores how seriously his legal team is treating the alleged misquote.
What the Lawsuit Alleges
At the heart of the case is the claim that Jennings relied on a manipulated video to misrepresent Piker’s words. The complaint describes the video as false and fabricated, and argues that the resulting accusation went far beyond ordinary political criticism.
Defamation cases involving public figures face a high legal bar, and the case will likely turn on what Jennings said, what the underlying video actually showed, and whether Piker’s team can prove the statements were made with knowledge of their falsity or reckless disregard for the truth. The filing in DC federal court is only the opening move, and Jennings has not yet publicly responded in the reporting so far.
The lawsuit also lands in a heated media moment, with streamers, cable commentators and political influencers increasingly clashing across platforms, and with edited clips circulating faster than ever. Whatever the outcome, the case is set to become a closely watched test of where political commentary ends and defamation begins.
